Polymer Enhanced Gravel Roads

Polymer Science 20 Years Ahead Of Its' Time

"What's significant about this rural road construction process is that it relies solely on prime acrylic polymers, rather than toxic chemicals to help us make a proper base. KleerGrip effectively penetrates and hardens base layer. KleerTack maintains its stickiness as a tackifier even after curing, giving us ample time to prepare any kind of  surface, KleerPrime solidifies the top tire contact surface unlike any other polymer I've used, and KleerSeal impregnates the work, making it water repellent, causing water to bead on the road surface and slide off into the culverts. At this point we can leave it as a natural road or cap it with asphalt, knowing that either way we have finished a road that will now withstand the rigors of traffic and the vicissitudes of weather."

- - R. Davis, PE

At Lauden Kleer, we embraced a fresh, eco-conscious approach to rural road construction, guided by the latest advancements in polymer science. Our goal was to reimagine a sustainable methodology that prioritizes durability, adaptability, and efficiency in every phase of road development.:

  • A special polymer formula for each phase of the process
  • Balance cost-effectiveness with optimal subgrade compaction that integrates into a project's work breakdown structure as financially feasible
  • Improved load-distribution across the widest spectrum of soil types
  • Tackifier polymer to improve the bond between distinct layers
  • Lasting penetrating waterproofing treatment that ensures long term resilience to adverse weather conditions as the number one enemy of gravel structures
  • All the above without raising the project cost

In developing our solutions, we remain dedicated to science-backed innovations that uphold both environmental integrity and the real-world durability and adaptability essential for sustainable infrastructure.

Our research went beyond conventional thinking. Building on hands-on experience and insights from leading research, we developed four specialized polymers, each tailored to address critical steps: subgrade compaction, load distribution, layer adhesion, wear course resilience, and impermeability.

The result is a robust solution that supports strong bonding for non-cohesive materials, offers true waterproofing, and extends road durability—all at a cost engineers can justify. With this approach, we provide rural roads built to last, adaptable to extreme weather, various aggregate types, and even sand. Rather than sidestepping sand’s challenges, we created a polymer for it.

Our commitment to science-driven advancement has culminated in a comprehensive training course:

Q. KleerGrip™ sounds great, but do you have it with higher solids content?
A1:
Yes, we have KleerPrime™, which contains 50% active solids content, designed as a surfactant superadhesive that works efficiently even with a smaller quantity than higher solids formulas. It has an MFFT of 23°C and offers excellent spreading capability, making it ideal for leveling slurries or wet mixes quickly.

A2:
We also offer KleerOne™ at 55% active solids, MFFT of 5°C, featuring high adhesion, rapid curing, and notable soil hardening effects. Although it has a pH of 4.5 (the only polymer below pH 7 in our line) and a slight latex odor, it’s designed for quick applications like haul roads where traffic readiness is critical. Note: KleerOne™ is not recommended for mortar applications with rebar due to acid pH.

Q.
KleerPrime sounds great, but do you have it with freeze/thaw resistance?
A:
Yes, we have KleerPrime Plus™, which maintains stability even in storage conditions as low as -25°C, making it suitable for winter storage needs. It's KleerPrime™ winterproofed.

Q.
KleerPrime™ sounds great. Can I get the same price?
A1:
Yes, the same pricing as KleerGrip™ for this product. Any special offer you received direct from us will be honored.

A2:
Any promotional pricing offered for KleerGrip™ directly from us also applies to KleerOne™.

Q. Any other differences between KleerGrip™ and KleerPrime™?
A:
While both are advanced surfactants (mix well in a diverse range of materials) with exceptional UV and weather resistance, they each have unique attributes. KleerGrip™ (41% solids) is formulated for deep penetration and works effectively for stabilizing sand, dust, and soil. KleerPrime™ (50% solids) excels in creating a smooth, self-leveling surface, making it ideal for use in mortar slurries or wet mixes.

KleerPrime™ is also favored in micro-surfacing applications like bridge and road resurfacing with thin concrete layers, thanks to its controlled pace of self-leveling. Both products contribute to long-term concrete strength due to molecular migration. The choice between them depends on project needs: choose KleerPrime™ for spreading and leveling, and KleerGrip™ for maximum penetration and dispersion, especially in cooler conditions.

Polymer Selection Guide:

For winter storage: Use KleerPrime Plus™.
For maximum penetration and dispersion needs: Use KleerGrip™ if working below 23°C.
Instructions for KleerGrip™, KleerPrime™, and KleerTack™ are included in our guidelines for effective application.

About KleerTack™:

KleerTack™
is our versatile tackifier polymer, designed to keep surfaces tacky post-cure, ideal as an adhesive layer between substrates or for long-term dust control on large surfaces (e.g., mining tailings). Unlike temporary agents (e.g., oils or evaporative "water substitutes"), KleerTack™ is a stable, 100% acrylic polymer that hardens aggregates effectively, ensuring durable dust control without soil contamination.

Additional Notes:
Specialty Polymers:
All Kleer™ polymers (except KleerOne™) serve unique, targeted purposes and, while high-end, are offered at competitive prices to encourage learning their benefits.
KleerOne™: Known for high-quality film formation and rapid curing within the 55% solids range, this acrylic polymer is easy to apply, especially suited for quick, deep applications in haul road work.
Reminder: For either a single, deep application or the four-component Gravel Road Building System, Kleer™ polymer costs should remain consistent on average. For fast, high-impact applications, consider KleerOne™ with generous application. For building a base and a surface for a polymer enhanced gravel road, consider using our four specialized products method with an economical application rate. You can use less KleerPrime and even less KleerGrip to achieve the same effect as KleerOne, because they are designed that way. These are advanced anionic surfactant polymers that would normally cost more.

KleerSeal™ is a distinct product in our line. Like our other acrylics, it functions similarly and cures through water dilution and evaporation. However, it is specially formulated for a single purpose: to render any porous material it is applied to water-repellent.

Description:

KleerGrip™ delivers consistent results in dust control and soil stabilization, whether on busy construction sites or unpaved roads. It mitigates dust and sand migration, and it hardens the aggregates it is mixed into, resolving into a hard matrix, that continues to harden as the anionic molecules continue to migrate. Internally, we say "KleerGrip™ is what other polymers wish to be when they grow up". Excellence. Every time.

The closer the pH is to neutral (or slightly alkaline), the more compatible the polymer will be with inert soils, crushed rocks and hydraulic binders (cement will jump to a pH of 12-13 when water is added). With KleerGrip, concrete cures to a robust and durable finish, showcasing enhanced compressive strength and a deeper, darker color due to the KleerGrip's effective molecule migration into the cement matrix.

With a 0°C MFFT, KleerGrip ensures reliable film formation even in cooler environments or seasons without the need for additional heating. Its durability provides long-lasting protection against erosion, rutting, and surface degradation, especially in high-traffic areas exposed to heavy machinery.

When added to cement mortars, KleerGrip significantly boosts the compressive strength of concrete. The lower the MFFT (0°C), the more flexibility to work in any climate or season. Kleer™ polymers are strongly anionic. With all these features, the more complex the polymer is to manufacture, therefore these products generally cost more. Not at Lauden Kleer.

For even harsher conditions, we also have KleerZero™ that forms a film at -15°C, a perfect polymer for extreme cold (Alaska, Canada, Scandinavia, etc).

KleerGrip is an original Lauden Kleer Prime Polymer with engineered enhanced characteristics specific for penetrating and forming a stable matrix in sand, dust and soil, where everything is precisely calculated to work the way it should. Because you have other things to worry about.
